Course Blueprint
Module 1- Introduction to the Science of Reading
Learn what is meant by the "Science of Reading" and discover an easy-to-use lesson plan format for your structured literacy lessons. We give you a 1-day, 2-day and 5-day format so you can choose what works best for you!
Module 2- Review: Card & Blending Drills
In this module, we dive into the review portion of an SoR lesson. You'll learn about 3 different drills: the concept card drill, the grapheme/phoneme drill, and the blending drill. We show you how to do each one, and give you the templates and resources to implement these drills in your classroom.
Module 3- Phonological Awareness
In the phonological awareness module, you'll learn about the continuum of P.A. skills, ways to jazz up your P.A. instruction with fun manipulatives, and we demonstrate a lesson at the syllable level and the phoneme level.
Module 4- Guided Discovery
Learn about the importance of guided discovery to introduce new concepts to your students. We'll even plan one together so you're confident doing it on your own!
Module 5- Coding & Reading Words
In this module, you'll learn a system for coding words, and we share 3 quick, how-to videos on how to code words, divide syllables, and how to code morphemes in words.
Module 6- Encoding
Learn about encoding, an often overlooked portion of a reading lesson. We'll share and model 3 activities for encoding: spelling sounds (What Says?), words (S.O.S.), and sentences (Dictation). You'll also receive a student encoding page and reference posters for each of the 3 activities. PLUS, we'll share a new & improved spelling test template that is aligned with SoR!
Module 7- Oral Reading
In this module, you'll learn how to choose the right texts for your students, how to use decodable readers (we walk you through this step-by-step), and what both you and your students should be doing during the Oral Reading portion of the lesson.
Module 8- Fluency
In the fluency module, we'll explore the 3 components of fluency and you'll learn specific interventions and strategies for each one. Use these with your students who struggle to read with fluency!
Module 9- Comprehension
Here, you'll learn how to incorporate comprehension instruction in your SoR lessons, and what to do when your students are accurate & fluent readers, but struggle to comprehend.
Module 10- Vocabulary & Morphology
In this last module, you'll learn about morphology, and how to teach prefixes, suffixes, and roots to your students in a Science of Reading-backed way. You'll also receive a digital lesson template for introducing new morphemes in your classroom!
